Right! Freedom of Music & Speech

Some say that freedom of speech and authors' rights complement and support each other. Others argue the contrary, claiming they are polar opposites. But merely asserting that authors' rights is an obstacle to freedom of speech is to greatly simplify the matter. For music creators authors' rights can be the tool that provides the possibility to use their freedom of speech.

For the Swedish Society of Popular Music Composers, it is essential to engage in the issue of freedom of speech, because we believe it is one of the conditions for creation and creativity. 

We would also like to highlight and discuss the political power of music. This last year for example, there was definitely a soundtrack to the overthrowing of President Mubarak of Egypt, as well as when rioters took to the streets in the UK. Add to that the countless individuals all over the world who risk their very lives for expressing the music and values they believe in. 

The organization Freemuse, who advocates freedom of expression for musicians worldwide, is both inspiring and assisting SKAP in the realisation of Right! Through Right! and the brilliant speakers joining us, we hope to deepen the debate on integrity, freedom of speech and authors' rights.
